Homemade pizza sauce is an easy recipe for family pizza night!
Who doesn’t love pizza? If you don’t, just leave. These people can’t exist in my world. Kidding! Sorta. Maybe. Kinda. Like most kids, my daughters adore pizza. They inhale it. Homemade pizza, restaurant pizza, they don’t give a care. Pizza for everyone! I love to order take out pizza but it does get a bit spendy so I make homemade pizza when I can, usually on Friday, pizza night!
My absolute favorite, no fail pizza dough recipe comes from food blogger Lauren from Lauren’s Latest. She is absolute must follow! She produces great recipes and has an awesome culinary point of view: Everyday Ingredients Extraordinary Meals. For my pizza dough, I use her recipe for no-fail pizza dough, and I’m telling you, it has never failed me.

Ok. Onto sauce. I have tried. so. many. sauce. recipes. Ugh. Such a disappointment at times. BUT, I have found the perfect pizza sauce recipe. You will never buy canned pizza sauce again. A can of crushed tomatoes simmered down to a tasty and thick pizza sauce. So amazing. And simple! Saute garlic and herbs in butter oil, add tomatoes, onions, and basil, simmer for an hour and your done! It’s fantastically simple and delicious. I really hope you give this a try. Homemade pizza is the best 🙂
Homemade Pizza Sauce
(adapted from Serious Eats)
Ingredients
1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
1 Tbsp unsalted butter
2 medium cloves garlic – minced
1 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
Large pinch Kosher salt
28 oz can crushed tomatoes
2 sprigs fresh basil
1 medium yellow onion – quartered or diced whichever you prefer
Pinch of sugar to taste
Directions
1. Heat medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Combine butter and oil and heat until butter is melted.
2. Add garlic, oregano, pepper flakes, and salt. Cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant but not browned, about 3 minutes.
3. Add tomatoes, basil, and onion. Bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook until reduced by 1/2, about 1 hour.
4. Taste, taste, taste, and season accordingly with salt or sugar. Depending on the quality of canned tomatoes you use, you may need to add sugar to cut some of the acidity or salt to bring out more flavor.
5. Cool and store for later or top your favorite pizza dough and serve.
Note: The sauce will keep for up to two weeks in a well sealed container.
